Sanaksar Mother of God Nativity Monastery

The Sanaksar Mother of God Nativity Monastery ( Russian Рождество-Богородичный Санакса́рский монастырь ) is a Russian Orthodox monastery of the Krasnoslobod eparchy located near Temnikow .

The Sanaksar Monastery is four kilometers from the Temnikow bus station, on the left bank of the Moksha . The monastery was founded in 1659. Until 1918 it belongs to the Tambov eparchy . Almost a century later it temporarily lost the status of an independent monastery and belonged to the Sarower monastery . The monastery experienced a new boom under Starez Feodor Sanaksarski (Theodor von Sanaksar; civil Iwan Ignatjewitsch Uschakow) from 1764 to 1774. In 1765 Sanaksar was restored as a monastery. Its architectural ensemble was built between 1765 and the 1820s. The monastery has a trapezoidal plan. The three-tiered and five-towered Cathedral of the Nativity of God in the Baroque style was completed in 1774, the 52 m high bell tower in 1776.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, the Sanaksar Monastery was one of the most famous monasteries and was an important intellectual center in Russia. The monastery was closed in 1929 under Soviet rule. On May 7, 1991, it was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church.

Two saints of the Russian Orthodox Church, Theodor von Sanaksar and his nephew Admiral Uschakow , who lived near Temnikow in his village Alexejewka from 1807 to 1817 and sometimes lived in the monastery, were buried in the monastery area.
