Oma is about 305 km as the crow flies southwest of Naryan-Mar , the administrative center of the Nenets Autonomous Okrug. The place is located on the right bank of the eponymous river Oma , around 47 km before its confluence with the Chosha Bay of the Barents Sea .

As to the administrative division, Oma belongs to the Sapolyarny rajon . It is also the administrative seat of the municipality of Omski selsowet , which includes not only Grandma but also the villages of Wischas and Snopa.

history

The place emerged in the first half of the 19th century as a station on a trade route to Mesen . The first settlers were Old Believers who were persecuted in the Russian Empire at that time . In addition to agriculture, the settlers lived from fishing, hunting and cattle breeding. There was also trade with the Nenets . Administratively, Grandma was first part of the administrative unit Dorogorskaja wolost and from 1902 the Nesskaja wolost within the Mesenski ujesd . In Mesenski ujesd, Grandma was the seat of the village community Omskoye selskoye obschtschestvo .

From 1924 Grandma belonged to the Kanino-Tschoschskaja samojedskaja wolost . In the course of an administrative reform in 1929, the Wolost was transformed into the Kanino-Timanski rajon . With the dissolution of the Rajon in 1959, Oma's administration was carried out by the Omski selski sowet , whose administrative center was Oma.

In a further administrative reform, the place became the center of the Omski selsowet in 1998 , which has belonged to the Sapoljarny rajon since 2005.
