Edgar Mayer (born October 18, 1953 in Feldkirch ) is a former Austrian politician ( ÖVP ). From 2004 to 2018, Mayer was a member of the Austrian Federal Council from the state of Vorarlberg . Edgar Mayer was President of the Federal Council in the first half of 2013 and in the second half of 2017.

Professional and personal career

Mayer attended from 1967 to 1970, the business school . After that he was employed as a businessman. In 1972 Edgar Mayer began his military service and then joined from 1973 to 1974 as part of his service in the Austrian Army to United Nations peacekeeping in Cyprus on.

From 1974 Mayer attended the police school in Vienna and then worked until 1983 as an officer in the Feldkirch city police in the executive service. Since 1983 Edgar Mayer has been a municipal clerk at the municipality of Feldkirch , where he worked in the building and property management until 1995, from 1995 to 1998 as head of the social and housing department, from 1998 to 2003 as head of the citizen service, from 2003 to 2006 as head of the Volunteer offices and from 2006 to 2010 worked as a project manager in strategy and project management.

Mayer is married, has two children and lives in Feldkirch.

Political career

In 1992 Edgar Mayer was elected chairman of the ÖAAB Feldkirch, a sub-organization of the ÖVP. As early as 1997, Mayer became regional chairman of the union of community employees in Vorarlberg. From 2003 to 2012 Mayer was the regional chairman of the ÖAAB Vorarlberg, the ÖGB Vorarlberg as well as the regional chairman of the Christian trade unionists group . From 2011 to 2015 he was Vice President of the Vorarlberg Chamber of Labor , from 2012 to 2018 he was regional chairman of the ÖAAB Vorarlberg. At the state party conference of the Vorarlberg People's Party on May 9, 2015, Mayer was elected as one of the deputies of the state party chairman.

After the state elections in Vorarlberg in 2004 , the newly elected Vorarlberg state parliament sent Edgar Mayer to the Austrian parliament as Federal Councilor, as did the state elections in 2009 . In the first half of 2013 and four years later in the second half of 2017, Mayer subsequently held the office of President of the Federal Council , which alternates every six months in parallel with the chairmanship of the Governors' Conference between the federal states.

From January 1, 2018 Edgar Mayer was chairman of the parliamentary group of the ÖVP, in May 2018 Karl Bader was elected as the successor to the parliamentary group from October 1, 2018. Edgar Mayer himself resigned from the Federal Council on September 30, 2018, his successor as a member of the Federal Council sent by the Vorarlberg state parliament was Martina Ess .
