Martina Ess (born July 3, 1980 in Feldkirch ; born Martina Schäper ) is an Austrian politician of the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP). On October 3, 2018, she was elected a member of the Federal Council by the Vorarlberg state parliament , and on October 11, 2018, she was sworn in .

Life

Martina Ess grew up in Satteins and, after graduating from high school, studied German language and literature, philosophy, psychology and pedagogy at the University of Innsbruck from 1998 , completing her degree in 2003 as a Magistra . In 2007/08 she was a Fulbright Fellow and Teaching Assistant at the University of Cincinnati in Ohio . She also trained as a mediator for community-based conflict resolution.

After completing her studies, she initially worked as an assistant to the management at Vorarlberger Medienhaus and in personnel consulting, from 2005 to 2011 she taught at the Schillerstraße grammar school in Feldkirch , and from 2008 to 2010 also at the Götzis adult education center . She has been a freelance presenter, concept developer and trainer since 2011.

politics

In the 2017 National Council election she ran for the ÖVP as the top candidate on the Vorarlberg state list and in 14th place on the federal list.

She succeeded Edgar Mayer as a member of the Federal Council and was nominated for this on September 10, 2018 by the state party executive of the ÖVP Vorarlberg. In the state parliament session on October 3, 2018, the Vorarlberg state parliament then elected Martina Ess as a member of the Federal Council sent from Vorarlberg. In the 2019 National Council election, she ran as the top candidate of the Vorarlberg People's Party on their state list for Vorarlberg and in 18th place on the ÖVP federal list. However, as in the 2017 election, she was unable to win a National Council mandate via either list.

A few weeks after the election, Martina Ess announced that she would not be available again as a member of the Bundesrat after the Vorarlberg state parliament had to nominate the members of the Bundesrat after its election on October 13, 2019 . Instead, she wants to go back to her original job. Heike Eder was nominated by the Vorarlberg People's Party as her successor in the Federal Council . After Josef Moser left the National Council at the end of March 2020, Werner Saxinger took over the mandate she was entitled to on the federal list.
