Johannes Justus von Landsberg (actually Johannes Gerecht, usually called Lanspergius) OCart (* around 1490 in Landsberg am Lech ; † August 10, 1539 in Cologne ) was a German Carthusian monk , whose writings were of outstanding importance in the piety of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and theology .

Landsberg is not to be confused with the humanist Johannes Landsberger, who is about a generation older, who also came from Landsberg am Lech and who wrote a “Dialogus” in 1494 in the vicinity of Leipzig University to save the honor of poetry.

Life

Lanspergius enrolled on 28 April 1507, the Faculty of Arts of the University of Cologne and was there on July 12, 1508 for bachelor doctorate. The time of his entry into the Carthusian Order is uncertain, but in 1509 he was admitted to profession in the Cologne Charterhouse , where he was appointed vicar and novice master in 1523. From 1530 to 1534/1535 he was prior of the Vogelsang Charterhouse near Jülich . Due to his poor health, he returned to Cologne and was again vicar there. But his health did not improve. Landsberg died in 1539.

Typical for Landsberg was the devotion to the Sacred Heart, for which he was also able to inspire the young Jesuits Petrus Faber and Petrus Canisius . One of his much-received works on the Sacred Heart is the scripture Divini amoris pharetra (Quiver of God's Love) . He was the first editor of the revelations and spiritual exercises of Gertrud von Helfta . The volume and number of translations and reprints of his publications made Lanspergius an important figure among the figures of early Catholic reform.
