The Waschka ( Russian Вашка , formerly Важка ) is a 605 kilometer long left tributary of the Mesen in the northeast of the European part of Russia .

course

The Waschka flows at a height of about 175  m from the swamps in the area of the watershed between the river systems of the Mesen and the Northern Dvina . The source is located in the far west of the Komi Republic , a good 50 km northwest of the village of Jarensk , a former city already in the Arkhangelsk Oblast on the Wytschegda . A few kilometers below the source, the river crosses the small Waschkaty Lake and then flows further in a predominantly northward direction through sparsely populated taiga area , mostly meandering . In the middle reaches the Waschka turns in a north-westerly direction, later reaches the territory of the Arkhangelsk Oblast and flows into the Mesen a little below the Selo and Rajon administrative center of Leschukonskoye at a height of 23  m as its most important tributary.

The most important tributaries are Loptjuga, Jowwa and Sodsim from the right and Jortom, Putschkoma and Syrjanskaja Yeschuga from the left. There are around 900 lakes in the river's catchment area.

Hydrography

The catchment area of the Waschka covers 21,000 km². Near the mouth of the river, the river is a good 250 meters wide and about meters deep; the flow velocity here is 0.6 m / s.

The Waschka freezes from late October to early May. The water flow at the measuring point Reshelskaya, 58 km above the estuary, averages 186 m³ / s with a minimum monthly mean of 26.6 m³ / s in March and a maximum monthly mean of 871 m³ / s in May.

Infrastructure

The Waschka is navigable for more than 350 km from the village of Ust-Watscherga, but only for small vehicles when the water level is high, as the course of the river is heavily silted up. Therefore, only the 85 km from the village of Keba to the mouth are considered an inland waterway.

There are no cities along the river, but there are a number of larger settlements.

The most important place not far from the river on the territory of the Komi Republic is the urban-type Blagojewo settlement , which was initially built as a base for Bulgarian forest workers from 1968 and was therefore named in honor of the Bulgarian social democrat Dimitar Blagoew (Russian transcription Blagojew ). Later, still not consistently completed road was Syktyvkar about Mikun , Ussogorsk and Karpogory to Arkhangelsk out through the town, and the bridge over the Waschka the road was named bridge of friendship between the USSR and the People's Republic of Bulgaria ( Most Druschby SSSR i BNR ) . Four kilometers north of the settlement is the Wendinga railway station , the end point of a branch line starting from Mikun on the Pechora Railway (40 km before Wendinga the line splits; the other branch leads to Koslan, which is also only 40 km away, on the parallel river here Mesen). The station is named after the Komi village of Wendinga, which was first mentioned in 1485 and is located directly on the river . The connection of the railway lines Mikun - Wendinga and Arkhangelsk - Karpogory (on the Pinega ) by building the 200 km long remaining section has been discussed again and again since the 1970s, most recently as part of the Belkomur project (Russian acronym for White Sea -Komi - Ural ; Bel oh dear More- Kom i Ur al ) a direct railway Perm  - Syktyvkar - Arkhangelsk, for the government of the Russian investment Fund may 118 billion rubles (just over 3 billion euros) will be provided. The railway line on the left bank of the Waschka west of Wendinga has been stretched for kilometers since the 1980s, but the construction of a bridge has not yet been tackled.

The largest town on the river in Arkhangelsk Oblast is Leschukonskoye near the mouth, which is connected by a road along the right bank of the Mesen with the city of Mesen on the lower reaches of the river.
