Dietrich Wilhelm von Menges

Dietrich Wilhelm von Menges (born October 26, 1909 at Gut Wangritten, Bartenstein district (East Pr.) ; † June 14, 1994 in Essen ) was a German industrial manager, most recently chairman of the Gutehoffnungshütte (GHH).

Life

The son of an East Prussian landowning family, after graduating from high school in Königsberg , studied law at the Georg-August University in Göttingen from 1928 and became active in the Corps Saxonia Göttingen . He later continued his studies in Berlin and Konigsberg on, taking after obtaining his doctorate to Dr. jur. a position as legal advisor at a Berlin credit bank. For a while, von Menges was a consultant in the Reich Ministry of Economics , before he switched to the Essen trading company Ferrostaal , a wholly owned subsidiary of GHH, in 1938 . He took part in the Second World War from 1939 to 1945, most recently as a captain and general staff officer.

Released from captivity, v. Menges resumed his work at Ferrostaal in 1945. He became a board member in 1947 and chairman of the board in 1949. From 1961 he was also a member of the board of the parent company and in 1966 he succeeded Hermann Reusch as CEO of Gutehoffnungshütte . Under his leadership, the traditional Oberhausen company developed into a global plant and mechanical engineering group. He was particularly successful in building trade relations with Eastern Europe and the Third World . In 1975 he retired. His successor at the GHH head was Manfred Lennings .

Menges was a member of numerous supervisory boards, president or honorary president of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Essen and consul of Peru .

His daughter Elisabeth married Peter Rohde .
