The ruin is located on a hill about 29 kilometers southwest of Antakya and six kilometers east of Samandağ in the southern Turkish province of Hatay .

The monastery is not to be confused with Qal'at Sim'an , the monastery of Symeon Stylites the Elder in Syria

history

The Syrian pillar saint Symeon the Younger (521-592), who was born in Antioch on the Orontes and who had previously lived on pillars in other places, spent the last 45 years of his life here on a twelve meter high pillar. He preached from there, he was credited with miraculous healings and was venerated as a saint while he was still alive. The place was a place of pilgrimage until the 13th century. As a result of the beginning of the Seljuq rule in the region, the monastery was abandoned.

description

Church ruin

The ruins of three churches are still preserved from the cross-shaped monastery. In the first there are remains of mosaics, while the second has rich ornamentation . The third is rather simple and was probably mainly used by monks. The base of the column on which Symeon lived can still be seen, which is surrounded by an octagonal space.

The medieval name of St. Simeon of the town of Seleukia Pieria , today's Samandağ, comes from the monastery .
