Ralph Samuelson (born July 3, 1904 , † August 28, 1977 ) was an American inventor and farmer . Samuelson is considered to be the inventor of the sport of water skiing .

Life

Samuelson began his first experiments on Lake Pepin in the summer of 1922 in Lake City , Minnesota , shortly before his 19th birthday. He managed to go water-skiing on the lake with self-made wooden water skis. In 1925 he made his first jumps over a ramp on the lake. At the age of 23 he suffered a back injury, so that he could no longer continue in sports. He later worked as a turkey breeder . Samuelson was married and had three children.

Samuelson did not obtain a patent for his invention of water skis. It was only Fred Waller from Huntington, New York who applied for a patent for this.
