Norwegian influence

In 1870, 1135 Norwegians lived in Spring Grove and made up the majority of the population. Many of the early settlers were from Hallingdal and had lived in America for some time before they moved to Spring Grove. Later immigrants came to Spring Grove directly from the Hallingdal area. Until the 1930s, coexistence was strongly influenced by this culture. For example, a regional Spring Grove dialect was established.

Spring Grove is still Norwegian today. For example, most shops and meetinghouses are labeled in English and Norwegian, and there is a Norwegian flag next to many American flags. Almost two-thirds of the population stated in the 2000 census that they had ancestors from Norway.
