Houston is a small town ( city ) in Houston County in southeast Minnesota , one of the northern states of the United States .
It is located on the Root River about 30 kilometers from its confluence opposite La Crosse in the Mississippi .
On August 19, 2007, the city named after Sam Houston had to be evacuated during the flood in the Midwest , as the flood with a height of 5.80 meters was only just below the dyke height of 6 meters.

The "International Festival of Owls" has been held in Houston every year since 2003. This is the only owl festival in North America.
