Michael Müller-Wille (born March 1, 1938 in Münster ; † November 12, 2019 in Kiel ) was a German prehistorian with a special focus on recent prehistory and early historical archeology .

Life and academic career

The son of the geographer Wilhelm Müller-Wille attended the Paulinum grammar school in Münster. After graduating from high school, from 1958 he studied prehistory , classical archeology and geography at the Westphalian Wilhelms University , the University of Uppsala (prehistory of Scandinavia and Quaternary geology ) and the University of Montpellier . In 1964 he was at Kurt Tackenberg in Munster with the theme "Iron Age corridors in the North Sea continental areas" to Dr. phil. PhD .

After a year as a research assistant at the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn , he went to the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel in 1965 . There he completed his habilitation in 1970 on the subject of boat graves. With Hayo Vierck and others he published the results of the excavations in Haithabu . In 1976 he became professor for prehistoric and early historical archeology at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz . In 1981 he returned to Kiel as professor for prehistoric and protohistoric archeology. From 1986 to 1987 he was dean of the philosophy faculty there. From 1989 to 1991 he was rector of the University of Kiel.

In 2003 Michael Müller-Wille retired .
