Ekkehard II (Meissen)
Ekkehard (* around 985; † January 24, 1046 ) from the noble family of Ekkehardines was a count in Gau Chutizi and in Burgward Teuchern . He was a son of Margrave Ekkehard I and Suanehild, who came from the Billunger family. He was from 1034, as Ekkehard I , Margrave of Lusatia and from 1038, as Ekkehard II , Margrave of Meissen .
Life
The influence of the margrave was so strong through the politically and militarily strategically important area that the Ekkehardines became the closest advisers to the emperors and princes.
He was married to Uta von Ballenstedt . The marriage remained childless. Ekkehard and his wife Uta were among the 12 donors of Naumburg Cathedral .
The Ekkehardine dynasty ended with Ekkehard. At the request of Emperor Konrad II, he and his brother Hermann moved the Zeitz diocese to Naumburg and bequeathed a considerable part of their estate to the collegiate church of St. Cyriakus in Gernrode in Uta's home in Anhalt.
In association with Archbishop Bardo of Mainz , Ekkehard led the Thuringian army in 1040, which was the campaign of King Henry III from the north . against the Duchy of Bohemia should support. He advanced victoriously over the Eger, but was forced to turn back due to the misfortune of the royal army (defeat in the First Battle of Chlumec ). In the following year, duke Břetislav I was forced to submit to submission by the union of the two armies in front of Prague . Heinrich III called it “Fidelissimum fidelem nostrum”. in a document from 1041.
