Peace of Bautzen
The Peace of Bautzen ( Upper Sorbian Budyski měr , Polish Pokój w Budziszynie ) was a peace treaty concluded on January 30, 1018 at the Ortenburg in Bautzen between the Roman-German Emperor Heinrich II and the Polish ruler Bolesław I. Chrobry .
The peace that came about on the orders of Henry II, which was preceded by a persistent request from Bolesław I Chrobry, ended the wars that had been waged for 15 years and at the same time the alliance that Henry II had concluded with the pagan Liutizi in 1003 .
Archbishop Gero of Magdeburg , Bishop Arnulf of Halberstadt , Margrave Hermann I of Meissen , Count Dietrich and the imperial treasurer Friedrich acted as negotiators for the empire . As a guarantee, hostages were given by both contracting parties.
Boleslaw kept lehnsfrei the disputed between the parties Mark Lausitz and the country's Milzener in what is now Oberlausitz . In addition, he established dynastic ties with the Ekkehardins by marrying Oda , the youngest daughter of the Margrave of Meissen, Ekkehard I , on February 3, 1018, immediately after the peace agreement . The Polish rule over the Milzenerland did not end until 1031.
In the summer of 1018, Bolesław, together with German and Hungarian auxiliaries, briefly won control of Kiev , the center of the Kievan Rus . From there, as a partner of the German-Roman Empire, he threatened the Byzantine Emperor Basil II , who was in dispute with Emperor Heinrich II over possession of southern Italy .
