Qassersuaq [ ˌqasːɜsːuɑq ] (the old spelling K'agsserssuaĸ ) is a desolate fallen Greenlandic settlement in the district Upernavik in Avannaata Come Unia .
location
Qassersuaq is located on a narrow headland on the mainland. This makes the place one of only three in the district that are on the mainland. Naajaat is seven kilometers north-northwest .
history
Qassersuaq was probably founded as Udsted in 1866 . The place was a good hunting ground, but by the beginning of the 20th century the hunting conditions had deteriorated significantly and many residents had moved to the north.
In 1911, Qassersuaq became a separate municipality within the colonial district of Upernavik. The residential areas Naajaat , Innaarsuit and Tussaaq also belonged to her and she was part of the 12th district electoral district of North Greenland.
In 1918 only 27 people lived on the Udsted, which was extremely small. They lived in three houses. There was also a Udsteds administrator's apartment, which had been built in 1890 as a wooden house with a peat wall facade, had two rooms and a kitchen and was already very dilapidated. The store from 1866 had initially also served as a residence for the Udsteds administrator. The bacon house from the same year was a peat wall house with a wooden roof, which initially housed the shop. The chapel was a Greenlander house with ten benches, a wooden baptismal font and a table that served as an altar. In addition to the Udsteds administrator, an unskilled catechist and midwife worked in Qassersuaq.
Qassersuaq does not appear in the 1930 census and so it can be assumed that the place was abandoned in the 1920s.
