Tasiusaq [ ˌtasiuˈsɑq ] (according to the old spelling Tasiussaĸ ) is a Greenlandic settlement in the district of Upernavik in the Avannaata Kommunia .

location

Tasiusaq is located on the south coast of a peninsula in the west of the quite large island of the same name 71 km north of Upernavik. The nearest settlements are Innaarsuit 19 km south and Nutaarmiut 20 km northwest.

history

In 1805 an Udsted was founded a few hundred kilometers to the east. In 1806 43 people lived in two houses in Tasiusaq. In 1808 there was an earth house with a wooden roof as a dwelling and the same as a store of provisions, materials and products. As early as 1811, however, the station was robbed and destroyed by English whalers. The place was still uninhabited in 1850. It was not until the end of the 19th century, presumably in 1898, that Tasiusaq was rebuilt as Udsted, which was located at the place called Noorliit . In 1906, some commercial buildings were built further east, which shifted the place one kilometer in this direction. At the beginning of the 20th century, many people moved further north.

In 1911 Tasiusaq became its own municipality, which from north to south initially included the residential areas Illulik , Ikermiut , Itissaalik , Mernoq (abandoned shortly before or after), Kuuk , Sarfaq , Ikerasaarsuk , Nutaarmiut , Saattoq , Saffiorfik , Uingasoq (abandoned shortly before or after) and Eqqorleq belonged to. In 1916 Sarfaq was abandoned and settled near Appaalissiorfik . Kittorsaq was settled around the same time . The community had a north-south extension of around 150 km, which was many times more than in all other communities. The other communities in the colonial district only had an extension of about 25 km. In 1923 an Udsted was founded in the previously uninhabited Nuussuaq and the community thus split up. The border between the two communities was set south of Kuuk, so that from now on the community only consisted of six residential areas (Ikerasaarsuk, the newly settled Itilliarsuk , Nutaarmiut, Saattoq, Saffiorfik, Eqqorleq) and measured around 50 km from north to south.

In 1918 Tasiusaq had 38 residents, including the Danish Udsteds administrator. In addition to the Udsteds administrator, the residents also included a cooper, a head catechist and a midwife. There were five Greenlandic houses, an apartment for the Udsteds administrator, a shop with a provisions store, a bacon house with another provisions store in the attic, a cooperage with a coal house and a powder house. Most of the buildings were constructed in 1906 using materials from earlier buildings. There was also a church from 1909 which was a wooden house with clapboards. There was a small church tower on the south side. The church also served as a school and had a sermon chair, an altar and a harmonium inside. In 1918 a house that was to serve as a residence for the widow of a Udsteds administrator was sold to Thule Station in Uummannaq , where it served as a warehouse and travel accommodation.

In 1930 there were 51 people in Tasiusaq. In 1940 there were 76 and in 1950 there were 111. The population increased further to 121 people in 1960 and 152 in 1970.

In 1950 Tasiusaq became part of the new Upernavik municipality . During the administrative reform in 2009, the place came to the Qaasuitsup Kommunia . Tasiusaq has been part of Avannaata Kommunia since 2018 .

economy

Tasiusaq lives mainly from the halibut fishery and the processing of the halibut into dried fish . The place also houses a private hide processing facility.

Infrastructure and supply

Tasiusaq (2010)

The port of Tasiusaq is located in the far east on a peninsula and consists of a 5.5 m long quay. The Tasiusaq heliport supplies the village in winter, for example, when no ships can call for the port. The rest of the traffic is done by dog sleds or snowmobiles . The few paths in Tasiusaq are in poor condition and urgently need to be renewed.

Nukissiorfiit supplies the place with electricity via a power station, while the water supply is secured by lakes or ice melt. Wastewater is discharged into the sea and into the ground. TELE Greenland guarantees the telecommunication connection.

Development

The Tasiusap Atuarfia teaches about 40 students up to the ninth grade. There is also a Pilersuisoq branch for the supply of goods, a service building and a village office built in 2002. There are five protected houses in Tasiusaq.
