Tussaaq [ tusːɑːq ] (according to the old spelling Tugssâĸ ) is a deserted Greenlandic settlement in the district of Upernavik in the Avannaata Kommunia .

location

Tussaaq is located in the southwest of an island of the same name on a tiny peninsula that is hardly connected to the rest of the island. The small island of Qeqertannguaq is right in front of the village . The closest places are Naajaat 16 km northeast and Innaarsuit 18 km northeast.

history

Tussaaq was first mentioned in 1798 when 44 people lived there. The place does not appear in the population lists from 1806 and 1850.

Tussaaq was not repopulated until the 1880s. The residents came from the Udsted Kingittoq , which subsequently lost its Udsted status. From 1911 Tussaaq was part of the municipality of Qassersuaq . In 1918 the place had 61 inhabitants who lived in eleven houses. One of the residents was a fisherman. There was also a catechist and a midwife in town.

When Qassersuaq lost his Udsted status and was abandoned, which must have happened around 1920, Tussaaq was instead made Udsted. In 1920 a school chapel was built. In 1922 the place got a shop and a packing house. A coal house was built in 1923 and a packing house in 1930. It was not until 1945 that a house was built for the Udsteds administrator. Even as Udsted, the population remained similar to that which Tussaaq had as a place to live.

In 1950 Tussaaq was incorporated into the new municipality of Upernavik . During the administrative reform in 2009, the place became part of Qaasuitsup Kommunia , but Tuussaaq was completely abandoned the following year.

Population development

The population of Tussaaq remained constant until 1990. Only then did it go back to almost zero within a good half a decade. Between 1998 and 2009 Tussaaq only had one resident. Tussaaq has been abandoned since 2010.
