Qaasuitsup Communia
Qaasuitsup Kommunia was a Greenland municipality with a population of 17,117 at the time of dissolution, covering an area of 660,000 km². The seat of the local government was Ilulissat .
On January 1, 2018, the municipality was split into two municipalities, Avannaata Kommunia and Qeqertalik .
location
Qaasuitsup Kommunia was in northwest Greenland. In the east, the municipality bordered the unincorporated area of Northeast Greenland National Park and the municipality of Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq , and in the south to the municipality of Qeqqata Kommunia . In the north of the former municipality is the municipality-free area of Thule Air Base (Greenlandic Pituffik).
history
Qaasuitsup Kommunia was founded with effect from January 1, 2009 by amalgamating the previous communities of Kangaatsiaq , Aasiaat , Qasigiannguit , Ilulissat , Qeqertarsuaq , Uummannaq , Upernavik and Qaanaaq . The municipality thus included parts of the former administrative districts of Avannaa and Kitaa . On January 1, 2018, the municipality was divided into the two municipalities Avannaata Kommunia and Qeqertalik Municipality .

Description of the coat of arms: Eight leashed white sled dogs in blue from behind, their blue leashes visible over a wide white snow surface and attached to two curved sled runners protruding from the edge of the shield . A rising silver moon with the opening pointing to the left , a silver sun without a face with short rays and a silver snowflake float above the dogs under a silver aurora light with three pointed incisions on its underside , placed between the edge of the shield as the shield head .
Symbolism: The coat of arms designed by the artist Kristian Fly shows a dog sled team with eight dogs, three mountains, a snowflake, sun, moon and the northern lights .
