The municipality of Vaigat ( Danish Vaigat Kommune , Greenlandic Vaigatip Kommunia ) was a municipality in western Greenland from 1950 to 1973 .

history

The municipality of Vaigat was founded in 1950. It included parts of the old Ritenbenk colony district , which had fallen to the Jakobshavn colony district in 1942 . The municipality was in the east of Disko Island . The municipality border ran from the northwest tip of the island to the east tip along the island mountains. Another part was on the south coast of the Nuussuaq peninsula . On March 29, 1963, this area was transferred to the municipality of Ilulissat , so that only the northeast half of Disko Island remained.

The main town of the municipality was the city of Qullissat , where coal was mined. Other places that were in the municipality over time were Ikorfat (1950-1953), Qeqertaq (1950-1963), Qullissaaqqat (1950-1956), Saqqaq (1950-1963), Tartunaq (1950-1954), Ujarasussuk (1950–1963) and Uunartoq (1950–1962). The city was relocated after the coal mining became unprofitable in 1972. Since the municipality had lost its population as a result, the area was incorporated into the municipality of Qeqertarsuaq , which previously formed the southwestern part of Disko Island, so that it now encompassed the entire island.

The name of the municipality, which was the only one that does not go back to the name of a place, refers to the strait of the same name in Danish ( Sullorsuaq in Greenlandic ), which separates Disko Island from the Nuussuaq peninsula and over whose south coast the municipality extended.
