Uunartoq [ ˈuːˌnɑtːɔq ] (according to the old spelling Ûnartoĸ ) is a deserted Greenlandic settlement in the district of Qeqertarsuaq in the municipality of Qeqertalik .

location

Uunartoq is located on Sullorsuaq (Vaigat) on the northeast coast of Disko Island . The nearest places still inhabited today are Saqqaq 28 km northeast, Qeqertaq 51 km east, Qeqertarsuaq 81 km southwest and Kangerluk 69 km southwest.

history

Uunartoq was already inhabited before the colonial era. Pagan graves with pearls and other objects that the inhabitants received from Dutch whalers bear witness to this. In 1793 six unbaptized Greenlanders lived in a house in Uunartoq. In 1798 the place was still inhabited, but in 1805 Uunartoq had no more inhabitants. It was not until 1870 that Uunartoq was repopulated 7.5 km to the southeast, shortly after Ujarasussuk was founded .

In 1915 the residential area had 38 residents. They lived in four houses but also had a house 30 km northeast near Qullissat , from where they went hunting. The residents were more affluent than the Ujarasussuk people. In 1930 Uunartoq had 31 residents. In 1940 there were 26 and in 1950 only 12, in 1960 the population had decreased to 7 and in 1962 Uunartoq was abandoned.

Uunartoq was a residential area of the Ujarasussuk municipality until 1950. He then became a part of the municipality of Vaigat .
