The Río Huaura (in the upper reaches of the Río Chichas ) is an approx. 152 km long tributary of the Pacific Ocean in the central west of Peru north of the capital Lima .

River course

The Río Huaura has its origin in the approximately 4260  m high glacial rim lake Laguna Rupahuay . The headwaters are in the south of the Cordillera Huayhuash , a mountain range of the Peruvian Western Cordillera . The Río Huaura initially flows 20 km south. In the municipality of Oyón , the Río Patón flows into the river from the left. This then turns to the south-south-west, later to the south-west. At river kilometer 109 the community Churín lies on the left bank of the river. At river km 104 the Río Checras meets the Río Huaura from the left, at river km 95 the Quebrada Huancoy from the right. At river kilometer 50, near the municipality of Sayán , the Río Chica meets the river from the left. This then turns towards west-northwest. The Panamericana crosses the Río Huaura 5.5 km above the mouth . At river kilometer 4, the river passes the town of Huaura on the right bank of the river . 2 km south lies the town Hualmay , 3.5 km south the city Huacho . The Río Huaura finally flows into the sea north of the small town of Carquín . The national road 18 follows the course of the river.

Catchment area

The Río Huaura drains an area of 4334 km². The catchment area of the Río Huaura extends over the provinces of Oyón and Huaura in the north of the administrative region of Lima . It borders in the north on the catchment areas of Río Supe and Río Pativilca , in the south on that of the Río Chancay . Beyond the Western Cordillera is the catchment area of the Río Mantaro . The mean discharge is 25.3 m³ / s. In August the monthly mean is 11.3 m³ / s, in March it is 59.3 m³ / s.

Use of hydropower and irrigation

In the source region of the Río Huaura is the Laguna Surasaca , which was provided with a dam. On the upper reaches at river kilometer 146 there is a weir ( ) on the Río Huaura.

At another weir ( ) at river kilometer 138 near Ucruschaca , the water is led via a canal to a hydroelectric power station 3 km downstream ( ).

The Cheves hydropower plant (171 MW ) is located on the left bank of the river at river kilometer 92. It is connected by a weir on the Río Huaura ( ) at river kilometer 106 and a weir on the tributary Río Checras, one and a half kilometers above its mouth, via a tunnel with water provided.

The Yarucaya hydropower plant (17.4 MW ) is located at river kilometer 68 on the left bank of the river. It is supplied with water from a weir 6 km upstream ( ). Just under 5 kilometers above this weir there is another dam ( ) that dams the river to the 10-hectare Picunche compensation basin .

A weir ( ) is located 2 km above Sayán . There an irrigation canal branches off on the left bank of the river. This flows past Sayán, crosses the Río Chica and then runs along irrigated agricultural areas on the southern bank of the Río Huarua.
