Eqqorleq [ ɜqːɔɬːɜq ] (according to the old spelling Erĸordleĸ ) is a deserted Greenlandic settlement in the district of Upernavik in the Avannaata Kommunia .

location

Eqqorleq is located on a small island of the same name directly on Baffin Bay . The closest place is Innaarsuit ten kilometers further east.

history

Eqqorleq was settled after 1887. From 1911 the residential area belonged to the Tasiusaq community . In 1918, 47 people lived there in eight houses. Four of the houses were extremely primitive and one was only 3.75 m² with a ceiling height of 150 cm. The residents were considered capable but extremely uncultivated and many did not even know their own last name. One of the hunters taught the local children. In 1930 Eqqorleq only had 24 residents. In 1940 the population had risen again to 38 people, but in 1947 there were only 21 and two years later the place was given up.
