Ikermiut [ iˈkɜmːiutˢʰ ] (according to the old spelling Ikermiut ) is a deserted Greenlandic settlement in the district of Upernavik in the Avannaata Kommunia .

location

Ikermiut is located in the south of a small island of the same name . It is located in a large open bay that forms part of Baffin Bay . The fjord Illullip Tunua flows northeast . The closest places are Kullorsuaq 28 km north and Nuussuaq 25 km south.

history

Ikermiut was founded around 1906 and at that time, together with the nearby Illulik, was the northernmost inhabited place in North Greenland , i.e. the west coast. From 1911 Ikermiut belonged to the Tasiusaq municipality . In 1918 13 people lived there and lived in two houses. The men often went north for weeks in winter, where they hunted polar bears, and so even had contact with the Inughuit , whose southernmost home was on Cape Seddon, 122 km away. In 1923 the living space fell to the outsourced municipality of Nuussuaq. In 1930 the population had risen to 37 people. In 1942 there were already 55 people in Ikermiut, but after that the population fell sharply. In 1950 Ikermiut became part of the new Upernavik municipality . The population was only 26 in 1950 and the last left in 1954.
