Ikerasaarsuk [ iˌkɜʁaˈsɑːsːuk ] (according to the old spelling Ikerasârssuk ) is a Greenlandic settlement in the district of Upernavik in the Avannaata Kommunia .

location

Ikerasaarsuk is located on a small island one kilometer north of Nutaarmiut . Both islands are separated by the Ikerasannguaq Sound .

history

Ikerasaarsuk was settled after 1887. Until 1910 the place had its own shop. At that time, many of the residents moved to other places and the continued operation of the store was no longer worthwhile. From 1911, Ikerasaarsuk was part of the Tasiusaq municipality . In 1918 Ikerasaarsuk only had 18 inhabitants, who formed four families and lived in four houses. There was also a small wooden chapel in the village where a trained catechist taught. The place had a maximum of 27 inhabitants. In 1950 Ikerasaarsuk became part of the new Upernavik municipality . In 1955 only 17 people lived in Ikerasaarsuk. From 1956 Ikerasaarsuk was seen as part of Nutaarmiut and was later temporarily abandoned. Ikerasaarsuk has been inhabited again since 1996. Ikerasaarsuk has never officially been given village status and is the smallest place in Greenland that is not a shepherd's settlement. In 2009 Ikerasaarsuk became part of the Qaasuitsup Kommunia . Since 2018 the place belongs to the Avannaata Kommunia .

Economy and Supply

The residents of Ikerasaarsuk live from hunting and fishing, but neither there nor in nearby Nutaarmiut are there any processing facilities for the fish caught. Both places are closely linked. There are no buildings in Ikerasaarsuk other than residential houses. All public buildings and the entire supply runs through Nutaarmiut.

Population development

Ikerasaarsuk has only been inhabited again since 1996. The number of inhabitants was initially a maximum of 17 people, but has fallen sharply since then. In some years there are no residents at all.
