Innaarsuit [ ˌinːɑːsːuitˢʰ ] (the old spelling Ivnârssuit ) is a Greenlandic settlement in the district Upernavik in Avannaata Come Unia .

location

Innaarsuit is located on the northwest coast of a peninsula of the same name about 46 kilometers north of the district capital, Upernavik . The closest inhabited place is Naajaat, nine kilometers to the southeast .

history

Innaarsuit was settled between 1910 and 1912. At that time, a family from Eqqorleq came to the place and settled here. In 1918 only eight people lived in Innaarsuit, namely the father of the family with his wife, two sons and four daughters. They lived in a large and well-equipped house. A second family lived there for a short time, but they soon moved away. From 1911 Innaarsuit belonged to the municipality of Qassersuaq . When the Udsted was abandoned in the 1920s, the parish became the parish of Tussaaq . By 1950 the population rose to just under 30 people. In 1960 there were 46 before the population rose sharply.

In 1950 Innaarsuit became part of the new municipality of Upernavik . It was not until 1985 that Innaarsuit was officially given village status, which resulted in Tussaaq becoming less important and finally abandoned. During the administrative reform in 2009 Innaarsuit fell to the Qaasuitsup Kommunia . Since 2018 the place belongs to the Avannaata Kommunia .

On July 13, 2018, residents from parts of the settlement had to be evacuated to higher areas for a few days because an iceberg over 100 meters high threatened to calve directly in front of Innaarsuit .

economy

Innaarsuit lives from hunting and fishing. The catch of the black halibut is particularly important .

Infrastructure and supply

The port of Innaarsuit is in the south of the settlement, from where the development has spread. There, dinghies and small boats are sheltered from the wind on a quay length of nine meters with a water depth of two meters. In addition, the Innaarsuit heliport is located in the north of the village . Other transport options include dog sledding or snowmobiles.

In Innaarsuit there is a Pilersuisoq branch that supplies the residents with food and other goods. Nukissiorfiit generates electricity through a diesel power station and heat through oil stoves. In 2002 a pipe system was created for the water supply. The garbage is dumped into the sea or dumped. Telecommunication is provided by TELE Greenland .

Development

Innaarsuit has, among other things, a school chapel and a service building. The Fiilimuup Atuarfia school accommodates around 25 students from first to eighth grade. A building in town is protected.

Population development

Until the 1950s, only about 30 people lived in Innaarsuit. Since then, however, the population has risen sharply. Innaarsuit is the place with the largest percentage increase in population (+ 150.0%) in Greenland since 1977, which is unusual especially for villages in the course of the strong urbanization tendencies in Greenland.
