Aappilattoq [ ˈaːpːiˌlatːɔq ] (according to the old spelling Augpilagtoĸ ) is a Greenlandic settlement in the Avannaata Kommunia in the Upernavik district .

location

Aappilattoq is located about 22 kilometers east of the district capital Upernavik on the northwest tip of an island of the same name . The Upernavik Icefjord (Ikeq) runs north .

history

In 1798 Aappilattoq had 19 inhabitants. In 1805 a yarn catching experiment was set up in Aappilattoq. In 1806, 21 people lived in a house in Aappilattoq. During the war from 1807 to 1814 the Udsted was abandoned. In 1850 the place was re-founded and 45 people were already living in Aappilattoq. In 1911 Aappilattoq became its own municipality, to which the residential area Aappi still belonged. It was part of the 12th district electoral council.

In 1918 Aappilattoq had 56 inhabitants who lived in eight houses. The place was quite wealthy and the residents did not have to go hungry. Halibut was fished when sealing was not very productive. In addition to the Greenland houses, there was an apartment for the Udsteds administrator in Aappilattoq, which was built in 1864. It was made of bricks but covered with planks. It had two rooms and a kitchen and also housed a small shop. There was a bacon house made of stone with provisions in the attic and another bacon house made of peat walls and a flat wooden roof from 1853. The school chapel was also made of bricks. It had a clock, a sermon chair, a wooden baptismal font, a harmonium and twelve chairs. All public buildings often suffered from water damage because the ground was often wet. Among the residents were the Udsteds administrator, a catechist and a midwife.

In 1927 and 1932 a packing house was built. In 1930 Aappilattoq had 69 inhabitants, but by 1950 the population had increased to 107 people. In 1952 Aappilattoq received a new school band. In 1960 there were already 136 people living in the village in 1970 there were 140.

In 1950 Aappilattoq became part of the new municipality of Upernavik . During the administrative reform in 2009, the place was incorporated into the Qaasuitsup Kommunia . Aappilattoq has been part of Avannaata Kommunia since 2018 .

economy

Aappilattoq lives off fishing and seal hunting. The most important fish caught is the black halibut , which is processed in the Aappilattoq fish factory. Tourism has recently been reviving in Aappilattoq. For example, dog sledding trips to Upernavik are offered.

Infrastructure and supply

Aappilattoq has no real harbor and the boats are mostly on the shore. Due to its location, the local sea rarely freezes over, so that Aappilattoq can usually be reached all year round. There is also the Aappilattoq heliport . In urban areas, traffic is by dog sled or snowmobile. Only one major road runs through Aappilattoq, but its condition is very poor. Smaller paths run from here to the houses.

Sewage and garbage are dumped into the sea. The water supply comes from the freshwater lakes nearby. TELE Greenland takes care of telecommunications .

Development

Because the place is completely surrounded by the sea in the west and high mountains in the east, Aappilattoq is very densely built and there are no other building areas. There are two schools in the village, namely the old school Paaviap Atuarfia and the new Narsannguup Atuarfia , built in 2011 , which also contains a library. About 30 students are taught up to the ninth grade. The village also has a service building, a village office, an assembly building, a Pilersuisoq branch and the church. Five buildings in Aappilattoq are classified as worthy of preservation.

Population development

After a low point in the mid-1980s, the population of Aappilattoq doubled to the turn of the millennium and has been falling again since then.
