Illulik [ ˈiɬːulik ] (according to the old spelling Igdlulik ) is a deserted Greenlandic settlement in the district of Upernavik in the Avannaata Kommunia .

location

Illulik is located at the end of the Illulissuaq peninsula , which is bordered to the north by the Illullip Tunua . Illulik is 31 km south-southeast of Kullorsuaq and 28 km north-northeast of Nuussuaq .

history

Illulik was founded around 1906 and was together with Ikermiut the northernmost inhabited place in North Greenland at that time . From 1911 Illulik belonged to the Tasiusaq municipality . In 1918 the residential area had 14 residents in two houses that are described as poorly built. The men often went north for weeks in winter, where they hunted polar bears, and so even had contact with the Inughuit, whose southernmost home was on Cape Seddon, 122 km away. In 1923 the living space was outsourced to the Nuussuaq municipality. By 1930 the population rose to 31 people. In 1950 Illulik became part of the Upernavik municipality . In 1950 there were only six people left in Illulik. These few residents remained for a quarter of a century until 1974 before the place was abandoned.
