Kittorsaq [ ˌkiˈtːɔsːɑq ] (according to the old spelling Kigtorsaĸ ) is a desolate, fallen Greenlandic settlement in the district of Upernavik in the Avannaata Kommunia .

location

Kittorsaq is located in the middle of a small, very narrow island of the same name in the south of the Sugar Loaf Bugt . Directly south is the large island of Qulleqqorsuit . The nearest inhabited place is Nuussuaq 22 km north-northwest and Nutaarmiut 47 km to the south .

history

In Kittorsaq there are numerous ruins that testify to an early settlement. Probably much of the population fell victim to a smallpox epidemic in the early 19th century. Kittorsaq was not repopulated until around 1915. In 1918, 11 people lived at the place where they lived. They had two houses that were well built. Otherwise they were quite wealthy and one of the residents was considered the best hunter in the entire colonial district. In 1923 Kittorsaq moved from the municipality of Tasiusaq to the municipality of Nuussuaq, which was spun off from it . In 1930 Kittorsaq already had 24 residents. In 1940 there were only 11 again, in 1947 the number rose again to 17 and in 1950 it was 12. From 1950 Kittorsaq belonged to the new municipality of Upernavik . In 1955 Kittorsaq was given up.
