Nutaarmiut [ nuˈtɑːmːiutˢʰ ] (according to the old spelling Nutârmiut ) is a Greenlandic settlement in the district of Upernavik in the Avannaata Kommunia .

location

Nutaarmiut is located on the east coast of an island of the same name . One kilometer north is the small settlement of Ikerasaarsuk with only a handful of residents. The closest larger town is Tasiusaq, 20 km southeast .

history

Nutaarmiut was probably settled around 1910. The residents came from the nearby residential area of Itilliarsuk . From 1911 Nutaarmiut belonged to the Tasiusaq municipality. In 1918 Nutaarmiut had 33 residents who lived in five houses. Between 1930 and 1950 the place had only 18 to 23 inhabitants. Then the population rose sharply. In 1950 Nutaarmiut became part of the new Upernavik municipality . Nutaarmiut never officially received village status. During the administrative reform in 2009, the place fell to the Qaasuitsup Kommunia . Nutaarmiut has been part of the Avannaata Kommunia since 2018 .

economy

The inhabitants of Nutaarmiut make their living mainly from sealing seals and catching black halibut . A fish factory was closed, which greatly contributed to the decline of the village.

Infrastructure and supply

Nutaarmiut has neither a port facility nor a heliport. Traffic within the village is via dog sleds and snowmobiles .

There is no water supply facility in Nutaarmiut. The electricity and heat supply runs via Nukissiorfiit , while TELE Greenland ensures the telecommunication connection of the villagers. Garbage is incinerated while sewage is dumped into the ground and into the sea.

Development

The buildings in Nutaarmiut are very scattered. The Nutaarmiut Atuarfiat school with around four students covers grades 1 to 7. There is also a church, library and village office. There is also neither a shop nor medical care, a service building or a day care facility, as is common in other villages.

Population development

Nutaarmiut is the smallest town in the district. The number of inhabitants rose until the mid-1980s and has since fallen sharply, which is attributable to the poor supply situation.
