The company was founded in 1882 by the Boston-based Godfrey Lowell Cabot (1861–1962) under the name "Godfrey L. Cabot, Inc.". At the beginning and up to the 20th century Cabot specialized in semi-metals and pharmaceuticals , at the beginning of the 21st century the portfolio was expanded to include small electronic components.
