Francis "Frank" Sylvester Monnett (born March 19, 1857 Kenton , Ohio , † April 23, 1953 in Columbus , Ohio) was an American lawyer and politician of the Republican Party . He was Attorney General of Ohio from 1896 to 1900 .

Career

Francis Sylvester Monnett, son of Reverend Thomas Jefferson Monnett and first wife, Henrietta Johnston, was born in Hardin County about four years before the outbreak of the Civil War . Nothing is known about his youth. In 1880 he graduated from Bucyrus High School. Monnett studied law at the Ohio Wesleyan University School of Law in Delaware, Ohio, and then did his Juris Doctor at the National University School of Law in Washington, DC. He then returned to Bucyrus, Ohio, where he started his own legal practice in 1883 opened.

Monnett was elected Attorney General of Ohio in 1896 and re-elected in 1898. He was a passionate and progressive reformer. During the administration of President William McKinley , he served as the Interstate Commerce Commission Attorney. In that regard, he tried the lawsuits against the Western Union Telegraph Company and the Standard Oil Trust in the United States Supreme Court . In 1897 he won a victory against the Standard Oil Trust. In 1898 he helped draft a law against trusts in Ohio ( Valentine Act ), a statute that was used in Ohio until the 20th century . His standpoints were generally supported by the electorate, but his crackdown on corporations earned him corporate wrath that he was defeated by Democrat John M. Sheets in the 1900 election .

Monnett married Ella Kate Gormely (1862-1942), daughter of Virginia E. Swingley (1839-1926) and James B. Gormely (1836-1913) in 1888. He died in Columbus, Ohio in 1953 and was then buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Bucyrus. A second memorial to him was erected at Monnett Memorial Chapel Cemetery .
