Paul W. Brown

Paul Wesley Brown (born January 14, 1915 in Cleveland , Ohio , † November 17, 2000 in Sarasota , Florida ) was an American lawyer , officer and politician ( Republican Party ). He was a judge on the Supreme Court of Ohio from 1964 to 1968 and 1973 to 1981 and Attorney General of Ohio from 1969 to 1971 .

Career

Paul Wesley Brown, son of William and Mary E. Brown, was born in Cleveland in 1915. Nothing is known about his youth. He worked in a steel mill to finance his education. In 1937 he graduated from Ohio State University with a bachelor's degree and in 1939 from Ohio State University College of Law with a Bachelor of Laws . After receiving his license to practice law, he began practicing with the Falls, Hazel & Kerr law firm in Youngstown, Ohio.

During the Second World War he enlisted in 1941 as a lieutenant in the Reserve Field Artillery and then from 1942 served as a captain in the Armored Field Artillery of the US Army in North Africa . Brown was captured there and imprisoned in an Italian POW camp. However, he managed to escape. He was then sent back to the United States to recover from his wounds. He was awarded a Silver Star and a Purple Heart .

Brown then joined the Williams, Andrews & Brown law firm in Youngstown. He served on the faculty at Youngstown State University and then served as the liaison between the university and the state government when the university changed its status from a private to a public institution.

In 1960 he was elected a judge on the Ohio County Court of Appeals and was re-elected for a full term in 1962. He was then elected to the Supreme Court of Ohio for a short term in 1964 and re-elected for a full term in 1966.

Ohio Attorney General William B. Saxbe was elected to the US Senate in 1968. Saxbe then resigned from his post as Attorney General and Ohio Governor Jim Rhodes appointed Brown as the new Attorney General of Ohio. In 1970 Brown won the Republican primary, but lost the election to Democrat William J. Brown , so his term ended in January 1971.

Paul Wesley Brown worked as a trust officer for the Ohio National Bank before returning to politics. He won the election for the judge's post at the Supreme Court of Ohio in 1972 and re-election in 1978. On August 31, 1981, he resigned from his judicial post and resumed his practice as a lawyer. He began practicing in the Columbus, Ohio office of the Cleveland firm of Thompson, Hine & Flory .

Brown married Helen Louise Page (1918-2006) in 1942. The couple had seven children. He died in Sarasota (Florida) in 2000. His body was then transferred to Lewis Center (Ohio) and buried there in the Resurrection Cemetery .
