James M. "Jim" Petro (born October 25, 1948 in Brooklyn , New York ) is an American lawyer and politician of the Republican Party . He was from 1995 to 2003 Auditor of State of Ohio , and from 2003 to 2007 Attorney General of Ohio.

Career

James M. Petro, son of Lila Helen Janca and William John Petro, was born in New York City about three years after the end of World War II . Nothing is known about his youth. He received his bachelor's degree in history from Denison University in Granville, Ohio in 1970 and his Juris Doctor degree from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio in 1973 . He was admitted to the bar in 1973 in Ohio and in 1974 at the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio . He is also admitted to the bar at the 6th District of the United States Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of the United States Court .

From June 1971 to August 1973 he was the Special Assistant to US Senator William B. Saxbe from Ohio. He was then from August 1973 to August 1974 Assistant Attorney in Franklin County, Ohio. Petro was Assistant Director of Law in the City of Cleveland from August 1974 to August 1975. In January 1975 he founded a law firm ( Petro & Troia ) with another lawyer , which he operated until May 1984. From May 1984 to February 1986 he was director of government affairs for The Standard Oil Company in Ohio. Petro was then partner at Petro, Rademaker, Matty & McClelland from January 1986 to April 1993 . During that time, he served in the Ohio House of Representatives from January 1987 to January 1991 . In February 1991, he became a commissioner in Cuyahoga County - a post he held until January 1995. He was also a partner at Buckingham, Doolittle & Burroughs, LLP from April 1993 to January 1995 . Petro was elected Ohio Auditor of State in 1994 and re-elected in 1998. In 2002 he was elected Attorney General of Ohio. In 2004 he participated as a delegate and in 2008 as a substitute at the Republican National Conventions . He ran for a Republican nomination for governor of Ohio in 2006 , but suffered a defeat to Secretary of State of Ohio Ken Blackwell . From January 2007 to September 2009 he was a Principal at Waite, Schneider, Bayless & Chesley. Governor John Kasich named him Chancellor on the Ohio Board of Regents in March 2011. He held the position until February 2013. Since February 2013 he has been working as a lawyer, advocate and mediator at N. & J. Petro and since August 2014 as Of counsel at Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP. He is also a member of Lambda Chi Alpha .

As the first Attorney General, Petro campaigned in 2005 in favor of the Innocence Project . His efforts resulted in the 2006 release of Clarence Elkins of proven innocence, convicted in 1998 of the murder and rape of his mother-in-law, and assault and rape of his six-year-old niece.

Petro had been a smoker for 40 years when he was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2009. After chemotherapy and radiation therapy , he was able to recover from it. But he kept a rough voice afterwards.

He gave up his opposition to same-sex marriages after his daughter Corbin married Jessica Clare Gelman, vice president of the New England Patriots, in Massachusetts in 2012 . Corbin told her parents about her homosexuality in 2000 when she was just 20 years old.
