John F. Oglevee

John Finley Oglevee (born May 17, 1840 in Harrison County , Ohio , † April 25, 1903 in Columbus , Ohio) was an American lawyer , officer and politician ( Republican Party ). He was a member of the Ohio General Assembly and was Ohio State Auditor from 1880 to 1884 .

Career

John Finley Oglevee was born and raised on a farm near Cadiz, Ohio during the Depression of 1837 . He attended public schools and Franklin College in New Athens, Ohio. During the Civil War he enlisted on August 6, 1862 in Company C in the 98th  Infantry Regiment of Ohio. He was badly wounded in the Battle of Chickamauga . For his bravery, he was promoted to second lieutenant. On September 26, 1864 he was appointed lieutenant . During the Atlanta campaign , he commanded his company and was promoted to adjutant in the regiment. In May 1865 he retired. He moved to Springfield, Ohio in 1866 . In the following years he studied law . For this he enrolled in October 1866 at the University of Michigan Law School . He was admitted to the bar in December 1867. In October 1871 he was elected auditor for Clark County and in 1873 he was re-elected. Oglevee was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives for Clark County in 1875 and re-elected in 1877. He was there from 1876 to 1879 in the 62nd and 63rd General Assembly. The Republican Party nominated him in 1879 for the post of Auditor of State of Ohio. In the following election in the same year he defeated the Democrat Charles Reemelin and then held the post for a four-year term. When he ran for re-election in 1883, he suffered a defeat against the democrat Emil Kiesewetter . After the end of his tenure, he resumed his practice as a lawyer in Columbus, Ohio. Oglevee died in Columbus in 1903 and was buried there in Green Lawn Cemetery .
