Ebenezer Wilson Poe (born November 11, 1846 in Hancock County , Ohio , † June 19, 1898 in Columbus , Ohio) was an American politician ( Republican Party ). He was Ohio State Auditor from 1888 to 1896 .

Career

Ebenezer Wilson Poe was born on a farm near Findlay, Hancock County , during the Mexican-American War . Nothing is known about his youth. His father enrolled in the Union Army in 1862 during the Civil War . He then enlisted in the same year at the age of 16 in Company G of the 133rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry and served in the Army of the Cumberland until his retirement in August 1864. Poe then went back to Findlay High School, where he graduated. He then taught at a school for three years. Then he worked as a salesman. In this context he ran a business between 1873 and 1875. He then worked as a traveling salesman for six years.

The Republican Party nominated him in 1881 as an auditor in Wood County . He won the next election. He was re-elected in 1883. At the Republican State Convention in 1887, he won the first round of nomination for the office of Auditor of State of Ohio, beating six others. In the following election he defeated the incumbent Auditor of State of Ohio Emil Kiesewetter of the Democratic Party . In 1891 he was re-elected. At the Republican State Convention in 1895, Poe ran as one of eight candidates for governor of Ohio. After the third ballot, his supporters switched to Asa S. Bushnell , who was later elected governor. After retiring as Auditor of State, he worked for a life insurance company . Poe died in Columbus in 1898 and was buried there in Green Lawn Cemetery .

He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) and the Grand Army of the Republic . He was also a Methodist .

On October 8, 1868, he married Caroline Thomas from McComb, Ohio. The couple had four children.
