John A. Bryan

John Alexander Bryan (born April 13, 1794 in Berkshire County , Massachusetts , † May 24, 1864 in Menasha , Wisconsin ) was an American lawyer and politician . He was from 1833 to 1839 Auditor of State of Ohio . He also belonged to the Freemasons .

Life

Nothing is known about the youth of John Alexander Bryan. At some point he studied law and then practiced as a lawyer. He moved to Ellicottville ( New York ). In 1827 he represented Cattaraugus County in the New York State Assembly . In the following years he moved to Columbus (Ohio). He was an Auditor of State between 1833 and 1837. The following years were overshadowed by the economic crisis of 1837 and the Mexican-American War . Bryan settled in Williams County in 1840 . There he was one of the co-founders of the City of Bryan . In 1845 he became US Chargé d'Affaires in Peru . Bryan later lived in Milwaukee and Menasha, Wisconsin. He died in Menasha during the civil war . His body was then transferred to Neenah, Wisconsin, where he was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery .

His son Charles Henry Bryan (1822–1877) sat in the California Senate and his son-in-law John B. Weller was a US Senator from California .
