James H. Godman

James Harper Godman (born October 19, 1808 in Berkeley County , Virginia , † October 4, 1891 in Marion , Ohio ) was an American lawyer , officer and politician ( Republican Party ). He was a member of the Ohio General Assembly and was Ohio State Auditor from 1864 to 1872 .

Career

James Harper Godman was born about four years before the outbreak of the British-American War in Berkeley County in what is now West Virginia . The family eventually moved to Marion, Ohio. Nothing is known about his youth. Godman studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1828.

In 1835 he was for the Marion County and Crawford County in the Ohio House of Representatives elected and reelected. 1839 Godman sat in the 34th and 38th General Assemblies. He was elected to the Ohio Senate in 1840 and 1841 . During this time he sat in the 39th and 40th General Assemblies. His terms in office were overshadowed by the economic crisis of 1837 .

After the outbreak of the civil war , he enlisted in the US Army on April 26, 1861 . He held the rank of major in the 4th  Ohio Infantry Regiment . On January 9, 1862 he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and on November 29, 1862 to Colonel . He was badly wounded at the Battle of Fredericksburg and then honorably discharged on July 28, 1863. On 13 March 1865 he was appointed Brevet - Brigadier promoted.

Godman was elected Ohio Auditor of State in 1863 and re-elected in 1867. He held the post for eight years. Godman died in Marion in 1891 and was then buried in the city cemetery.
