James Williams (politician, 1822)

James Williams (born May 21, 1822 in Prince George's County , Maryland , † November 1892 in Mechanicsburg , Ohio ) was an American doctor and politician ( Republican Party ). He was a member of the Ohio General Assembly and was Ohio State Auditor from 1872 to 1880 .

Career

James Williams was born about seven years after the end of the British-American War in Prince George's County and spent his childhood there. The family moved to Ohio in 1831 and settled in Mechanicsburg, Champaign County . Williams went to school there. He then studied medicine and was licensed as a doctor in 1843. His studies were overshadowed by the economic crisis of 1837 and the following years by the Mexican-American War . As a result of the gold rush, he moved to California in 1849 . Williams returned to Champaign County in 1851. In the same year he was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives and served there from 1852 to 1853 in the 50th General Assembly. In 1856 he moved to Columbus , where he worked for the Auditor of State Francis Mastin Wright in the agency. For the next 16 years he worked there as clerk, chief clerk and deputy . Williams was elected Auditor of State in 1871 and re-elected in 1875. He held the post for eight years.

Williams married Sarah Staley of Champaign County in 1848.
