Career

William Duane Morgan, son of Catharine Duane († 1863) and Thomas Morgan (1784–1855), was born about two years after the end of the British-American War in Washington County and grew up there. He came from a prominent family. Nothing is known about his youth. He had three siblings: Thomas Jefferson, George W., and Anna. With his wife Matilda Bowman Morgan (1820-1848) he had a daughter named Annie M. Morgan. In 1837 he and his brother Thomas bought a newspaper in Washington called Our Country, where they both worked as editors for several years. The following years were overshadowed by the economic crisis of 1837 and the Mexican-American War . William moved to New Lisbon, Ohio in 1840 . There he acquired the Ohio Patriot.

Morgan was nominated for Ohio Auditor of State at the 1851 Democratic State Convention and was elected in the following election. He held the post for a four-year term. When he ran for re-election, he was defeated by the Republican Francis Mastin Wright . Morgan then ran unsuccessfully in 1857 for the nomination for the Treasurer of State of Ohio, but suffered a defeat to James R. Morris .

Morgan lived in Columbiana and Newark, Ohio. Between 1856 and 1880 he owned the Newark Advocate. After his death, he was buried in the Washington, Pennsylvania city cemetery, where his wife and daughter were already buried.
