Walter Downey Guilbert (born February 11, 1844 in Guernsey County , Ohio , † February 5, 1911 in Columbus , Ohio) was an American politician ( Republican Party ). He was Ohio State Auditor from 1896-1909.

Career

Walter Downey Guilbert was born and raised in Guernsey County about two years before the outbreak of the Mexican-American War . He graduated from local schools and an academy in Wenona ( Illinois ). After graduating, he stayed in the Midwest until 1869. Those years were overshadowed by the Civil War . Guilbert then returned to Ohio. He went there until 1881 the production of staves ( staves ) and the extraction of salt in South Olive ( Noble County ).

He was elected Noble County Auditor in 1881 and re-elected in 1884. Guilbert was named Chief Clerk to the Auditor of State in 1888. In 1895 he was elected Auditor of State. Guilbert was re-elected several times. He held the post from 1896 to 1909. During this time he was active in the party. In 1888 he participated as a delegate to the Republican National Convention .

Guilbert married Mary Lucinda Jordan (1848-1922) of Noble County on February 2, 1868, daughter of Nancy Gorby (1812-1889) and John A. Jordan (1818-1895). The couple had at least three children: Carrie Margaret (1870-1945), Edgar James (1871-1932) and Walter Jordan (1882-1911). Guilbert was a Freemason , a Knight Templar, a member of the Mystic Shrine, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF), the Knights of Pythias, and the Improved Order of Red Men (IORM). He died in Columbus in 1911 and was buried there in Green Lawn Cemetery .
