Wenona is a small town ( city ) in the state of Illinois in the United States . The city is mostly in Marshall County , with a small part of Wenona belonging to LaSalle County . Wenona is 20 kilometers as the crow flies southwest of Streator and 150 kilometers southwest of downtown Chicago . At the last census in 2010 , Wenona had 1,056 inhabitants.

history

On March 17, 1875, Wenona was incorporated as a Village. In 1883 the Wenona Coal Company was founded and open pit coal mining began in Wenona. The population of Wenona almost doubled between 1870 and 1900, and in 1910 450 miners were working in the coal mine. In 1925 the mine ceased operations. During the Cold War there was a United States Army radar station in Wenona , which was used for air defense. In 1959, after only one year of operation, the radar station was dismantled.

In the United States Census 2010 Wenona had 1,056 residents, who were distributed among 444 households and 284 families. 96.7% of the population were white , 0.5% African American , 0.5% Native American, 0.4% Asian; 1.3% of the population were of other races and 0.7% had two or more races. Hispanics and Latinos made up 4.0% of the total population. There were married couples in 45.0% of the households, 12.8% of the households were made up of single women and 6.1% of single men. 32.0% of households had children under the age of 18 living with them and 30.0% of households had seniors over 65 years of age.

The median age in Wenona in 2010 was 37.8 years. 26.1% of the residents were younger than 18 years, 8.8% were between 18 and 24, 23.4% between 25 and 44, 24.9% between 45 and 64 and 16.8% of the residents were 65 years or older older. 48.2% of the population were male and 51.8% female.

At the 2000 United States Census , Wenona had 1,065 residents in 453 households and 278 families. 97.65% of the population were white, 0.38% African American, 0.47% Native American, 0.19% Asian, and 1.31% were multi-ethnic. 1.50% of the total population were Hispanics or Latinos.

At the time of the census, the median income in Wenona was $ 36,711 per household and $ 45,714 per family. The average per capita income was $ 17,951. 7.8% of Wenona's population lived below the poverty line , of which 7.9% were under 18 and 11.2% over 65 years old.

The Illinois Route 17 and Illinois Route 251 perform Wenona. There is also a connection to Interstate 39 , which connects Wenona with Rockford and Bloomington , in close proximity to the town .
