Robert Walker Tayler Sr.

Robert Walker Tayler senior (born November 9, 1812 in Harrisburg , Pennsylvania , † February 25, 1878 in Washington, DC ) was an American lawyer and politician ( Republican Party ). He was a member of the Ohio General Assembly and was Ohio State Auditor from 1860 to 1863 .

Career

Robert Walker Tayler Sr. was born in Dauphin County during the British-American War . The family moved to Youngstown, Ohio when he was a child . Nothing is known about his youth. He studied law and began practicing law in Trumbull County upon receiving his license to practice law. In 1839 he was elected Prosecuting Attorney in Trumbull County - a post he held for four years. His tenure was overshadowed by the economic crisis of 1837 . After his tenure ended, he moved back to Youngstown. In 1851 he was elected Mayor of Youngstown.

Tayler was elected to the Ohio Senate in 1855 and 1857 for the 23rd district and sat there from 1856 to 1859. In November 1859, he defeated the Democrat Godwin Volney Dorsey in the election to the Auditor of State. He took up his post on January 9, 1860. His term in office was overshadowed by the civil war. President Abraham Lincoln appointed him First Comptroller of the United States Treasury in 1863 . He then resigned from his post as Auditor of State in April 1863. He held the post of Comptroller for 15 years and became known as the watch-dog of the Treasury .

Tayler was married twice. His first wife was Louisa Woodbridge. The couple had seven children including Robert Walker Tayler , a federal judge and congressman . After the death of his first wife, he married Rachel Kirtland Wick, daughter of Caleb Wick. The couple also had seven children including Wick Tayler, who served in the Ohio House of Representatives .
