Roger Cloud

Roger Cloud (born December 4, 1909 in De Graff , Ohio , † April 20, 1988 in Columbus , Ohio) was an American politician ( Republican Party ). He was a member of the Ohio General Assembly . Then he was Ohio Auditor of State from 1965 to 1966 and 1967 to 1971 .

Career

Nothing is known about Roger Cloud's youth. He attended high school in De Graff and graduated in 1926. In the following years he worked as a farmer and factory worker. Cloud sat in the local school board in De Graff. In 1940 he won the election to the County Commissioner in Logan County . He held the post from 1941 to 1949. His term of office was overshadowed by the Second World War . Cloud successfully ran for a seat in the Ohio House of Representatives in 1948 and took that seat in early 1949. He held the post as Speaker of the House from 1955 to 1959 and from 1961 to 1967. Ohio Governor Jim Rhodes temporarily appointed Chester W. Goble Auditor of State to fill the vacancy created by Auditor's death of State Roger W. Tracy emerged. Subsequently, Rhodes named Cloud Auditor of State in September 1965 for the remainder of Tracy's term. In the late 1966 election, Cloud was elected Auditor of State and then held the post from 1967 to 1971. Cloud ran for the Republican nomination for Ohio governor in 1970 because Rhodes could not run again because of a restriction in office. He defeated Congressman Buz Lukens in the primaries , but suffered a loss to Democrat John J. Gilligan . The Crofters scandal overshadowed the election. The Republican Treasurer of State of Ohio, John D. Herbert , invested state money in immoral investments with a large campaign donor. After his defeat, Cloud withdrew from politics. He died in Columbus in 1988 and was buried there in Green Lawn Cemetery .

Cloud married Llewellyn DeWeese (1904-1995) in 1934. The couple had two children.
