Oviatt Cole

Oviatt Cole (born September 21, 1809 in Colesville , New York , † October 8, 1878 in Licking, Ohio ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ).

Life

Oviatt Cole, son of Sally Sarah Bishop and Anselm Cole, was born in Broome County about three years before the outbreak of the British-American War . Not much is known about his person. At some point he married Nancy Tucker (1812–1878). The couple had two sons. Between 1836 and 1842 he was recorder in Medina County when he was in Litchfield ( Ohio lived). The Governor of Ohio David's death appointed him in 1863 to the Auditor of State of Ohio, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Robert Walker Tayler senior originated. At the then following Republican State Convention in 1863, Cole suffered a defeat in the first ballot regarding the Republican nomination for the office of Auditor of State to James H. Godman , who later won the election. Cole held the post as Auditor of State until early 1864. His tenure was overshadowed by the Civil War . After his death in 1878, his body was transferred to New York, where he was buried in Windsor Village Cemetery in Windsor, Broome County.
