The Helpterberg medium-wave transmitter was built in the late 1970s and consisted of three guyed transmission masts arranged in a row in the Helpter mountains near Woldegk . In the contemporary transmitter tables, this transmitter system was listed under the name "Neubrandenburg".
Originally a large-scale transmitter system from the GDR was to be built here, from which the national programs would have been broadcast with up to 2 MW . But that never happened and so the Helpterberg medium-wave transmitter was only used as a low-performing filler transmitter for Western Pomerania . First came from 1978 to the Berliner Rundfunk on the frequency 657 kHz with 20 kW from here, from 1980 on also on the frequency 558 kHz the program Radio DDR I, in the summer months the holiday wave.
After reunification , the NDR took over the frequency of 657 kHz and broadcast the NDR 4 program until 1996. Then the transmitter was shut down and dismantled.
