William Burnet (politician, 1730)

William Burnet (born December 13, 1730 in Elizabeth , New Jersey Province, †  October 7, 1791 in Newark , New Jersey ) was an American politician . In 1780 and 1781 he was a delegate for New Jersey to the Continental Congress .

Career

In 1749, William Burnet graduated from Princeton University . After a subsequent medical degree and his license as a doctor, he began to work in Newark in this profession. In the 1770s he joined the revolutionary movement. In 1775 he was a member of the Newark Committee of Safety . He was then a doctor in the Continental Army during the War of Independence . In Newark he set up a military hospital and treated wounded soldiers. From 1776 to 1783 he was also the chief military doctor for the eastern part of the then theater of war.

After the war, he also worked in agriculture in Newark. Between December 11, 1780 and April 1, 1781, he represented his homeland as a delegate in the Continental Congress. He gave up this mandate prematurely because his wife was ill. A little later he became a judge in Essex County . Whether he ever studied law is not mentioned in the sources. In 1787 he headed the New Jersey Medical Society . William Burnet died in Newark on October 7, 1791. His son Jacob (1770-1853) was later a US Senator .
