Commemorative medal on the occasion of the forest fire disaster in August 1975

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The commemorative medal on the occasion of the forest fire disaster in August 1975 is an award from the federal state of Lower Saxony . It was founded on November 3, 1975 by the then Minister of the Interior Rötger Groß under Prime Minister Alfred Kubel in memory of the aid provided in the forest fire disaster in August 1975 , which affected the districts of Celle , Gifhorn and Lüchow-Dannenberg in Lower Saxony.

Award terms

The medal was awarded to everyone who had given assistance in fighting the fire and to those who lost their lives as a result of their work. Specifically, the award was made for personal commitment in fire fighting, which was related to the forest fire disaster in terms of its content and timing. In principle, the commemorative medal was awarded for a full-day assignment, with a shorter service also being sufficient if this justified the award of the medal according to the nature of the circumstances of the assignment. The medal could also be awarded to people who had been on duty for a fee (police, professional fire brigades, etc.), if these helpers had acted beyond their normal service duties.

Procedural rules

In the case of the foundation of the commemorative medal, around 25,000 to 30,000 recipients, mainly fire service members, were assumed. The suggestion office, which should lead to the award of the commemorative medal, lay with the district president in Lüneburg . He was also able to arrange for organizations with headquarters outside the state of Lower Saxony that had participated in the fire fighting to submit their suggestions for the award of the commemorative medal. The district president then checked the suggestions for obvious deficiencies and then passed the award proposals on to the Minister of the Interior of Lower Saxony in triplicate. The Minister of the Interior then informed the District President of the names of the helpers who were to be honored with the medal. The medals and forms for the deeds of ownership were sent to the district president together with the lists of names, who then arranged for the medals and deeds to be handed over. A separate proposal had to be submitted for posthumous awards. The awards took place in 1977 and 1978.

Delivery

The medals were presented in the name of the Prime Minister by the District President or by an agency authorized by him to the person lent along with the title deed. The medal passed into the property of the borrower. Posthumous awards were given to the bereaved.

Appearance and wearing style

The bronze medal , 40 mm in diameter, shows flames on its obverse that are blazing around several tree trunks. The reverse shows the six-line inscription in the middle: FOREST FIRE / KATASTROPHE / IN / NIEDERSACHSEN / AUGUST / 1975 . The medal is worn on the left side of the chest of the recipient on a red-white-red ribbon.
