Stenocereus griseus is a species of plant in the genus Stenocereus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). A common Spanish name is "Pitayo de Mayo".
description
Stenocereus griseus grows tree-shaped with branched shoots and reaches heights of 6 to 9 meters. A distinct trunk is formed. The upright green, somewhat glauken shoots have a diameter of 9 to 12 centimeters. There are six to ten ribs bulging below the areoles . The one to three central spines are up to 1.5 centimeters long. The longest of them is up to 4 centimeters in length. The six to eleven radial spines are 6 to 10 millimeters long.
The broad, funnel-shaped, white flowers open at night and stay open until the next noon. Your bracts are bent back. The flowers are up to 10 centimeters long. The spherical to elongated, yellowish green to red or dark purple colored fruits reach a diameter of up to 5 centimeters. They are studded with thorns that fall off when ripe. The pulp is red.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Stenocereus griseus is common in Venezuela in the coastal areas and their offshore islands. The species is naturalized in Mexico . The first description as Cereus griseus was in 1812 by Adrian Hardy Haworth . Franz Buxbaum placed the species in the genus Stenocereus in 1961 .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
