Stenocereus fricii is a species of Stenocereus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors Alberto Vojtěch Frič . A Spanish common name is "Pitayo de Aguas".
description
Stenocereus fricii grows tree-shaped with numerous shoots , almost exclusively branched like candelabras from the base, and reaches heights of 4 to 7 meters. A barely noticeable trunk is formed. The light green to yellowish or grayish shoots are 2 to 7 meters long and have a diameter of 8 to 12 centimeters. There are four to six broad, wing-like, slightly wavy ribs that are 2.5 to 3 centimeters high. The seven to twelve grayish white central spines are 2 to 5 inches long. Four of them are longer and stronger than the rest. The radiating twelve to 14 radial spines are grayish white and 6 to 12 millimeters long.
The funnel-shaped to bell-shaped flowers open during the day and are 10 to 12 centimeters long. They are white and tinted with cream or pink. The spherical, red or yellow fruits reach a diameter of 5 centimeters. They are covered with about 25 thorns per areole , which fall off when ripe. The pulp is red.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Stenocereus fricii is common in the Mexican states of Colima , Guerrero , Jalisco , Michoacán and Sinaloa in deciduous forests at altitudes of 30 to 600 m. The first description was in 1973 by Hernándo Sánchez-Mejorada .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
