Klaus Jockers (born August 10, 1940 in Regensburg ) is a German astrophysicist .

Life

Klaus Jockers studied physics and astronomy in Munich and completed his dissertation Solar Wind Models based on exospheric theory at the end of 1969 (supervisor: Ludwig Biermann ). He then continued to work at the Max Planck Institute for Physics and Astrophysics (stays 1971–1972 at the Sternberg Institute , 1973–1975 at the Sacramento Peak Observatory), later at the Max Planck Institute for Aeronomy , and is a private lecturer in astronomy of the solar system in Goettingen .

The extensive theoretical work and observations by Klaus Jockers have contributed significantly to the understanding of head and tail formation and outflow phenomena including tearing of tails when approaching the sun and warming of comets consisting of dust and ice with the formation of the head as a cover of neutral gas (mostly water , Carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and nitrogen, H 2 O, CO, CO 2 , N) contributed by its positive charge and photoionization by rapidly passing particles of the solar wind . In the case of the Draconid comet , an inverse dependence of the polarization of the dust on the frequency was measured, which indicates organic material in the comet.
